WHAT‘S UP WITH ALL OF THESE FILTER RATINGS, NUMBERS AND COLORS?

There are three separate rating systems created by three different rating organizations.

  • MERV is the domestic and international Industry Standard rating system established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers.
  • MPR and FPR ratings were created by “3M” and “The Home Depot”, but at the end of the day they are rating the SAME filter!

What is a MERV Rating?

MERV is the acronym for Minimum Efficiency Rating Value and can range from 1 to 20.  These industry numbers equate to how well a filter captures and traps particles of all different sizes (i.e. household dust, pet dander, lint, viruses, etc.)  The higher the number, the more the filter collects and keeps it away from your pets and family…

What is an MPR Rating?

MPR is the acronym for Micro-Particle Performance Rating and typically can range from 300 to 2,000. This particular rating system was developed by 3M and measures a filter’s ability to capture and trap airborne particles.  Again, these industry numbers equate to how well a filter captures and traps particles of all different sizes (i.e. household dust, pet dander, lint, viruses, etc.)  The higher the number, the more the filter collects and keeps it away from your pets and family…

What is an FPR Rating?

FPR is the acronym for Filter Performance Rating and can range from 4 to 10.   This unique rating system was developed by The Home Depot for brands sold through their stores.  It utilizes a color code and numbering system that closely resembles the MERV rating.   Again, these industry numbers equate to how well a filter captures and traps particles of all different sizes (i.e. household dust, pet dander, lint, viruses, etc.)  The higher the number, the more the filter collects and keeps it away from your pets and family…
